For the past four months I have been silent on my blog because I needed to realign with the reason I wanted to start my blog. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to focus on topics that speak from my heart and topics that are relatable to others. During this time I started a wellness journey because I felt my mind, body, and spirit pulling me in the direction of focusing more on writing about self-care, self-love, natural beauty, and relationship talk.
I decided to break my life into segments that I could manage like self-care, self-love, personal development, and relationships. Theses are things I have experiences in or I’m learning about. With self-care I needed to take time to focus on me, even if it’s 5 minutes, I grabbed the time when I could. Of course I made things more complicated by over thinking my approach to self-care for my life. So to make things easier I decide to make a list of things I can do to practice self-care that would not interfere with my lifestyle. So here are six way’s I practice self-care as a busy mom and blogger.
GO FOR A WALK
The first thing was to get out of the house to go walking. A very simple way to get out and take a stroll around the neighborhood or to the walking park. When I first started walking I thought it would take away my troubles and worries, but I found myself thinking about it a lot more. So I figured what’s the point. I realized that I went about it the wrong way, I needed to consciously make the choice to release myself from what was worrying me and enjoy my walks. I had to break down and release myself from the things that were keeping me a prisoner of my mind. I needed to make a choice not to focus so much on the things that were not helping my life. To focus more on the things that make me happy.
Now, when I go for my walks, I brain dump the things on my mind and leave it at home or just release it from my mind and heart. Self-care has become so important in my life. I make sure I am making the choices to keep my mind and heart free from the things that are weighing me down.
I did a backpack exercise a few years back that included my self, a backpack, and rocks. The rocks were the size of a tennis ball. The backpack represented my mind and the rocks my worries. So every worry I had, a rock would be placed in the backpack. After I put all my worries in the backpack, I had to zip it up and walk around with it. And when I tell you it was uncomfortable, heavy, and tiresome carrying it around. Then I realized that this is what I consistently carrying around in my mind. But to see how it had a physical impact on my body I was convinced that I needed to change the things I allowed in my mind.
So when you are walking focus on happy and positive things. Make the most of the time you are out taking your walks. Take notice of the environment or if you have a camera take a few pictures.
I have come to appreciate journaling. Journaling is a therapeutic way of writing down your thoughts and getting clarity in your life. You can journal about whatever you want as long as you are taking the time to do it and being present. When taking the time to journal I like to have a snack and tea, curl up on my couch and allow my thoughts to flow from my mind onto my paper. I see journaling as a place to keep your inner thoughts and capture a moment in time that you can come back to and read.
If you are on a personal journey in your life you can document this time in your life. Taking the time to sit, be still, and write will make a big difference in your day because you are not keeping those thoughts in your mind.
Let me be honest about meditation because it’s a craft in it’s own right. For me it required self control and self discipline. I have a busy home at times so making the time to break away from the noise was hard.
I have made it a priority to wake-up before the kids and take at least five minutes to myself to sit in absolute stillness. With the mind I have it has been trying because I can never allow my mind to just focus on one thing without having my mind wonder. The more I educate myself on meditation and the different ways I can do it throughout the day will be a great addition for my self-care journey.
After meditating for about a month, meditation has given the ability to focus my mind on one thing. In that month I noticed I have been more calm and not as anxious. Mediation for me has been freeing because I have made me a priority. I have made my life my priority. Just taking the five to ten minutes to sit in silence and reflect is an amazing feeling. I’m trying to work my way to fifteen minutes of silence because I know the reward when I’m finished meditating. I found that when things in our lives are out of our control, don’t give it your energy to fix because all things have a way of working out.
Read A book
I began to read books when I started detoxing from social media for about four months now. It has been freeing to my mind because it’s a time away from comparing my life and my beauty to others. Don’t get me wrong social media is a great tool for entrepreneurs if used in a way to promote your business but for me it was driving me nuts. It was a time waster for my life and made me feel awful about myself at times.
So I began to guide my thoughts away from my distractions of social media and started going to my local library. I began to focus more on my thoughts and my own life. As a young girl I loved to read. Reading allows the mind to focus on the book and enjoy the moment. At times we all need a mental break from the things we are worrying about. So why not get lost in a book.
You will be surprised how thirty minutes has passed when reading a book. And a whole hour passed before you realized you are halfway through the book. Especially if it’s a good book that you haven’t picked up for months. Taking time to sit and read will give you time to focus on your needs and making you the priority.
HAVE A SPA DAY
Yes! Have a day to pamper yourself. I know there is nothing like going to the professionals but doing simple things at home can make it feel like you are at spa. Go all out. Give yourself a manicure and pedicure. Have a long soak in an Epson salt bath. Add your choice of essential oils to your bath to make it more luxurious. Light a candle or two, play some relaxing music, and just be in the moment.
As a mom it’s hard to find the time to have a spa day but I notice that if I just do one thing like soaking in an Epson salt bath, it’s really all I need. Spa day can be once a day or one day a week depending on your life. If you would like to have a full pamper day treat yourself to a spa in your city or town.
Making the time to get away from the noise and focus on the well being of self will make a difference in your life. I like to have a wall calendar or chalkboard sign that reminds me every Tuesday is pamper night.
DRINK A CUP OF TEA
Having a warm cup of tea to unwind will do wonders for the mind. I have always liked drinking a warm cup of tea during the day. It has become a ritual in my life because I have turned it into an intimate time for me.
I take the time to research teas and the benefits it will have to my health. I have made my own mixtures of teas with dried hibiscus and chamomile flowers. So tea time for me is about what my body needs and reflecting on the day. I like to pick a spot in the house and just be in the moment. If you drink coffee then make it a time for you to make it personal.
Having a time to reflect on the day allows time to catch a release. And what I mean by that is when you are making an effort to stay in a positive space, worry less, or controlling your thoughts and you find yourself dwelling on negative thoughts, just catch those thoughts and release them back into the world.
Okay beautiful, these are the things I have been doing for my self-care journey. I hope this inspires you to be mindful and keep yourself first. Making the effort to make the time to love on yourself and give yourself the attention you deserve will transform your life. It’s about mindfulness and understanding that you must take care of yourself.
